How to Make Brick Oven Pizza at Home

Let’s start with the science portion. Understanding how a brick oven actually functions can help you master your technique. The design of the brick oven creates a situation whereby heat created inside can “bounce around” or radiate to properly cook the pizza.

Now’s the fun part – the ingredients. From mozzarella, marinara sauce and basil (that’s called a Margherita) to those with multiple meats, cheeses and vegetables there’s really no limit to the combinations you can add to your dough. Here’s the step-by-step on how to convert your conventional home into a DIY brick oven:

1. Pick up some unglazed quarry tiles from your local hardware store or landscape supply center (for our demonstration, we’re using 8, 6”x6” tiles)
2. Arrange the tiles on the lower rack and upper rack to replicate the conditions of a brick oven
3. Heat the oven to its highest temperature setting
4. Place your pizza on the bottom rack and cook for about x minutes
5. Remove the pizza promptly when you get the desired amount of crunch on the crust
6. Let it cool for a moment, then slice and serve!
