How to Remove a Door Knob

Are you looking to swap out a door knob because it’s broken or just doesn’t look good anymore?  Well, before you replace it, we’ll show you how removing a door knob is done.  Check out the video:

Before you can replace the door knob, you have to remove the old one.  Most can be removed with just a screwdriver.  When you can freely remove both sides of the door knob, you’ll see the latch mechanism sitting inside the door.  Here’s where you’ll need that screwdriver again–to unscrew the latch plate so you can remove the latch.

What’s a backset?  Well, now that the old door knob and assembly is removed, you want to determine the proper size of your new door knob and assembly.  This is the hole in the door itself, which typically sits at either 2 ⅜” or 2 ¾” from the edge of the door.

Once you have these dimensions, you can go out and purchase your new door knob assembly.  Nowadays there are so many styles and finishes to choose from so if it’s something different that the other doors in the room or nearby, you may want to consider replacing those too so they match.

Now it’s time for the door latch installation.  Slide the new latch into the door, and tighten the screws.  Install the outer knob first, followed by the inner knob, lining up so the pin slides into the latch.  Hand tighten the screws and then use tighten with a screwdriver.

The last step is to install the strike place, but if you went with the same finish you can use the old one.
