What Vaccines do Dogs and Cats Need

In this video, you will discover the answers to pet-owners’ most common questions: What vaccines do dogs need? What vaccines do cats need? Is the rabies vaccine required for cats? Why do dogs get rabies vaccinations?

While most folks are up to date about the latest medical developments, it is equally important to stay informed about vaccinations for our pets. For example, what vaccines do dogs need? Or, what vaccines do cats need? The answer to these questions may surprise you.

Steve Dale, our pet expert, visited the Animal Medical Center in New York to get a credible answer about what vaccines dogs and cats need. Steve’s conversation with Dr. Richard Goldstein, Chief Medical Officer, outlines the latest information on animal health.

Is the rabies vaccine required for cats?

According to Dr. Goldstein, every dog and cat needs to receive essential core vaccines — including the rabies vaccination. Which non-essential vaccines are required will depend on your pet’s location and lifestyle. For example, indoor cats may receive different vaccinations than outdoor cats.

Why do dogs get rabies vaccinations?

It is important to remember that essential vaccines, such as the one for rabies, protect people as well as the dogs and cats, Dr. Goldstein explains. Vaccines for other diseases — such as Parvo, Distemper, or the Herpes virus in cats — are to protect animals. However, the rabies vaccination is in service of the owner.

Adverse events are very rare in pet vaccinations. “Companies have done a really good job of cleaning up the medications,” Dr. Golstein assures. Alas, the risk of disease usually outweighs the costs of vaccinating your pets.
