The #1 Way to Seal Drafty Windows for Less

Drafty windows stink.  After all, not only does it affect your comfort during the cold and warm months, but it also does a number on your utility bills.  It’s like literally throwing money out the window (cue cheesy TV commercial).  Seriously though, there are ways to deal with these – in particular this very affordable option we’re going to show you right now!

So, what’s the secret component to sealing drafty windows without breaking the bank?  Simple – shrink wrap.  Seriously.  It may seem strange, but not only does it work, but it does so handily.  Did you know that adding shrink-wrap or window film to a drafty window can increase its energy efficiency by up to 70%!  OK, now that we have your attention, here’s how to get the job done:

  • Purchase your window film kit from your local hardware store – depending on how many windows or their size, you can purchase more than one.
  • Remove the double-sided adhesive tape and apply it around the entire window, either on the frame or directly on the window.
    • NOTE: once applied, if you have any window treatments inside the pocket you will not be able to operate them, so be sure they’re in the position you prefer
  • Take a hairdryer and put it on the hottest setting, while steadily blowing on the film all around the perimeter… you’ll notice that while the film was somewhat loose when first applied, it tightens up (like a drumhead) when exposed to the heat.
  • Cut away any excess film and you’re good to go, matter of fact, the next time the temps are extreme outside, hold your hand up to the window film and you’ll probably notice a significant difference. And be sure to check your utility bills throughout the season to see just how significant the difference can be.
